To sign up for an event, send e-mail to nburns@westfordma.gov or call 978-399-2549. We will be adding opportunities over time, so please check back for updates. 'Save the Date' options for the fall are listed at the bottom of this web page.

I. SHELTER GRANT AND DRILL
Our unit received a $7,000 grant to groom 100 members for specialized 'strike teams' that can provide Administrative, Medical, or Behavioral Health services in disasters. We held three sessions of the MDPH-approved course, Introduction to Sheltering for MRCs,
for our members. Completion of this course and involvement on a strike team do not imply a requirement to serve; all responses are still voluntary.

Time is running out -- deadline this Wednesday, May 7 -- to register for our upcoming drill. Dr.Shannon Manzi, PharmD and James Sheard, FF/EMT-P are the primary instructors. Manzi and Sheard delivered the plenary for our last Training Day, where they were enthusiastically received for their expertise with international disaster responses. Joining them will be several colleagues who will provide specialized knowledge with hands-on medical skills.

Upcoming Shelter Drill
Day/Date:
Saturday, May 10 (rescheduled from 5/3)
Time:
8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Place:
Blanchard Middle School
Address:
14 West St, Westford MA 01886
Con-ed:
4 hours for medical participants

We have confirmed four hours of continuing education credits for medical participants. ALL levels of members are encouraged to help with initial set-up, and to enjoy the overview presentations. We're providing resources that allow about 50 medical volunteers to participate in the hands-on stations. Non-medical volunteers can also participate in the hands-on medical training, as space and their interest permits.

Blanchard School has served several times in the past as the location for Westford's emergency shelter. We seek to make this exercise as realistic as possible, drawing on actual experiences to practice shelter operations. The presentations will include a sheltering overview for all members, followed by interactive workshops in which to practice skills.

II. MRC ORIENTATION
Our next New Member Orientation. is scheduled for Thursday evening, June 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. Meet the unit's Director and Coordinator, learn basic operations and protocols, receive your MRC ID badge and polo shirt, and ask questions. Location: Town Hall, 55 Main Street, Westford MA 01886. If you have not yet attended this introductory session, or know someone who may be interested in joining the unit, then please contact us!

III. BIKE RODEO
The Town of Tewksbury is scheduling its third annual bike rodeo on Sunday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the new Tewksbury High School. The event has grown exponentially each year, now involving hundreds of participants and many corporate sponsors. We are asking for volunteers to help with a first aid tent, as well as promotion of the MRC through an information booth.

IV. NON-MRC OFFERING: PFA
Some of our statewide affiliates are offering basic and advanced classes on Psychological First Aid, or PFA, at multiple sites across Massachusetts this season. Training is open for all levels of members. Medical volunteers are eligible for at least five hours of contining education credit. Although our local offering has already occurred, contact the sponsors for additional class dates in Boston, Burlington, and other locations. Check the flyer for information; do not register through the MRC.

V. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: FALL FAIRS
It's not too early to start thinking about plans for a busy fall season. We're already signed up to support the following regional fairs, and will need at least two medical and two non-medical volunteers per shift.
